Trump Set to Appoint Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State

November 12, 2024

In a move that underscores his foreign policy direction, President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly set to nominate Florida Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. According to the New York Times, which cited three sources familiar with Trump’s considerations, the President-elect appears ready to finalize Rubio’s selection, though they indicated Trump could still alter his choice at the last minute.

Rubio, a third-term senator known for his hawkish stance on foreign affairs, has become a prominent figure in the GOP’s foreign policy circles. He’s made a mark with firm positions on China, Iran, and more recently, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Although he initially diverged from Trump on some foreign policy issues, particularly interventionist policies, Rubio has recently aligned with Trump’s calls for a diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine conflict.

The anticipated appointment reflects a full-circle moment for Rubio, who was once a vocal critic of Trump during the 2016 Republican primaries. Trump famously labeled Rubio a “RINO” (Republican in Name Only) at the time, but their rapport shifted significantly over the years. During Trump’s 2024 campaign, Rubio emerged as one of his strongest advocates, often championing Trump’s foreign policy vision.

In his political career, Rubio has strongly condemned communism, rooted in his family’s experience with Cuba. The son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio’s perspective on freedom and democracy has been shaped by his family’s background and his grandfather’s experiences with the Castro regime. He has since built a reputation for bipartisan efforts in the Senate, particularly on national security and economic reform. The Center for Effective Lawmaking ranked Rubio as one of the most effective senators, while the Lugar Center praised him for bipartisan cooperation.

Trump’s choice of Rubio, along with the appointments of immigration hardliners Stephen Miller and Tom Homan to advisory roles, underscores his administration’s commitment to hardline positions on foreign policy and immigration. Rubio’s confirmation, if finalized, is expected to face a Senate hearing in the coming months.
