President-elect Donald Trump is expected to appoint Stephen Miller, his former senior adviser, as Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy in his administration, signaling a return to hard-line policy stances, especially on immigration. The news was confirmed after Vice President-elect J.D. Vance congratulated Miller in a post on X (formerly Twitter) Monday morning, calling the appointment “another fantastic pick by the president,” following a CNN report.
Miller, a key figure in Trump’s first term, helped shape several of the administration’s most contentious speeches and policy proposals, particularly around immigration. His influence extended to crafting messages on border security, which became foundational to Trump’s America First agenda.
Since Trump’s departure from office in 2021, Miller has continued to shape the national dialogue as president of America First Legal. The organization, which consists of former Trump administration advisers, positions itself as a conservative counter to the American Civil Liberties Union, challenging the Biden administration and other institutions on issues such as free speech, religious freedom, and national security.
At Trump’s recent campaign rally at Madison Square Garden, Miller energized the crowd with a powerful speech that touched on mass deportation plans, which he advocates for under a second Trump administration.
“I want you to think for a minute about the decades of abuse that has been heaped upon the good people of this nation,” Miller said to a packed venue in Manhattan. “Their jobs looted, their loved ones’ lives taken by illegal aliens and criminal gangs who don’t belong in this country. One man dared to step forward nine years ago and say enough, no more. America gets its future back.”
Miller’s speech addressed both Trump’s legal battles and the recent assassination attempt against Trump, painting the president-elect as a leader who “took a bullet for democracy.” He also emphasized the urgency of securing America’s borders to prevent high-profile cases of violent crime associated with illegal immigration.
“Who’s going to stand up for our daughters? Who’s going to stand up for the girls of America, the women of America, the families of America?” Miller asked. “The cartels are gone, the criminal migrants are gone. America is for Americans and Americans only.”
With Miller in a top policy role, the incoming administration is expected to take a hard-line approach to immigration and national security, further focusing on policies aimed at prioritizing American interests and cracking down on illegal immigration.
