Mollie Hemingway Rebukes Trey Gowdy Over Matt Gaetz Criticism on Fox News

Former Congressman Trey Gowdy faced sharp criticism from Federalist editor-in-chief Mollie Hemingway during a fiery debate on Fox News’ Special Report Friday evening. The discussion, hosted by Bret Baier, centered on President Donald Trump’s controversial picks for his second administration, including his nomination of former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz as Attorney General.

Hemingway opened the segment by praising Trump’s bold choices, arguing they demonstrate his commitment to rooting out corruption within the Department of Justice (DOJ) and reversing the damage caused by the Biden-Harris administration. She described Trump as a transformational leader with “big goals and big vision,” intent on restoring faith in self-governance by addressing what she characterized as a corrupt and dysfunctional federal bureaucracy.

Gowdy, however, expressed deep skepticism over Gaetz’s nomination, labeling the choice “dumbfounding” and accusing Gaetz of corruption. He claimed the former congressman resigned to avoid sanctions from a House Ethics Committee investigation. “You don’t root out corruption at the Department of Justice by picking a corrupt person to lead it,” Gowdy remarked, arguing Gaetz’s nomination detracted from the other “grand slam” picks in Trump’s lineup.

Hemingway, in a scathing rebuttal, defended Gaetz’s record and his suitability for the role. She highlighted his pivotal role in exposing the Russia Collusion Hoax and other alleged abuses of power by federal agencies. “Matt Gaetz is one of the most effective people at fighting that Russia collusion hoax and other information operations,” Hemingway asserted. She further noted that Gaetz’s firsthand experience with government overreach uniquely positions him to address the DOJ’s systemic issues.

“For the last eight years, they [the DOJ] have run roughshod over the rule of law in this country. They have prosecuted political opponents,” Hemingway said. “We don’t have a Department of Justice. We have a Department of Injustice, and that’s why you get Matt Gaetz as a nominee.”

The segment also touched on the ongoing controversy surrounding Gaetz’s Ethics Committee investigation. While the FBI and DOJ cleared him of any criminal wrongdoing earlier this year, the unresolved House report continues to hang over his nomination like a “proverbial sword,” according to Baier. Senators reviewing Gaetz’s nomination have signaled interest in scrutinizing the report during the confirmation process.

Gowdy maintained that Gaetz’s nomination was a distraction, suggesting it undermined Trump’s otherwise strong picks, including figures like Elise Stefanik, Lee Zeldin, and John Ratcliffe. Hemingway dismissed this characterization, insisting that Americans are tired of establishment figures in Washington failing to address corruption while attacking those who challenge the status quo.

The heated exchange underscored the deep divides within Republican ranks over Trump’s approach to governing. With Gaetz’s nomination drawing both praise and criticism, it remains to be seen how the confirmation battle will unfold.
