KALAMAZOO, MI – Following a rally in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Vice President Kamala Harris and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer stopped by Trak Houz Bar & Grill haphazardly Saturday. Their exchange – accidental recorded on a hot mic – demonstrated Harris’s frustration that she is not popular with male voters, especially young Black and Latino men, a segment that is turning increasingly toward former President Donald Trump.
A recent GenForward survey found that 24 per cent of young Black men and 44 per cent of young Latino men now support Trump, which suggests that male minorities are in the process of upending the Biden-Harris re-election agenda.
“We need to move ground among men,” Harris was heard saying to Whitmer before she noticed microphones nearby. After realizing they were being recorded, Harris responded with characteristic humor, exclaiming, “Oh, we have microphones listening to everything! I didn’t realize that!” She then laughed and joked, “We just told all the family secrets! Oh shit!”
Whitmer jokingly laughed along while the two shook off the surprise. Harris’s admission that she has been struggling to appeal to younger male voters has been a recurring challenge in the campaign, as polls reflect her struggle to gain traction in this demographic.
The short discussion reveals Harris’ worries that traditional Democratic voters may no longer vote with their wallets. And, with Harris and Whitmer front and center, the hot mic incident further shows the need for the administration to start taking voters’ concerns seriously in the new era of minority and young male voters.
