Bitcoin in Your Paycheck? Oklahoma Might Say Yes!

Oklahoma State Senator Dusty Deevers just introduced a bill that could shake things up—the Bitcoin Freedom Act (SB325). If it passes, state employees, businesses, and even regular people might have the option to be paid in Bitcoin. But what does this actually mean?

What’s in the Bill?

The whole idea behind the Bitcoin Freedom Act is giving people a choice. Something crypto enthusiast with a zeal for decentralization can definitely be giddy about. They’re giving everyday people the choice to get paid in Bitcoin. Deevers argues that Bitcoin offers a safeguard from inflation and a good store of value with its fixed supply. It is generally accepted tha the U.S. Dollar loses value because the government is printing too much of it. His bill is an attempt to bring financial innovation to Oklahoma.

Here’s what the bill lays out:

  • State employees could be paid in Bitcoin. This means they would have the option to be paid in dollars, Bitcoin, or both.
  • Flexible exchange rates. Bitcoin’s value could be locked in at the start of a pay period or determined at the time of payment—whatever the employer and employee agree on.
  • Completely voluntary. No one would be forced to use Bitcoin. If you want it, great. If not, nothing changes for you.

Why This Matters

Oklahoma isn’t new to Bitcoin. Back in May 2024, the state passed a pro-Bitcoin law protecting people’s rights to mine, store, and use Bitcoin without extra taxes or restrictions. The Bitcoin Freedom Act builds on that.

And Oklahoma’s not alone. Word on the street is that Detroit is going to be taking crypto for, get this, tax payments in 2025. Meanwhile, Louisiana became the first state to let people pay for government services in crypto back in September 2024. Bit by bit, literally,  it seems like a handful of states are warming up to crypto. Leaving us wondering…who will be next?

What About Businesses and Regular Folks?

This isn’t just for government employees. If the bill passes, here’s how it could change things for businesses and individuals:

  • Businesses could offer Bitcoin salaries if they and their workers agree.
  • Regular people could negotiate Bitcoin paychecks just like they do with dollars.
  • Crypto companies might not need certain money transmitter licenses anymore, making it easier to operate in Oklahoma.

Is Oklahoma About to Become a Crypto Hub?

If this bill goes through, Oklahoma could become one of the most Bitcoin-friendly states in the country. Making Bitcoin an official payroll option—and cutting red tape for crypto businesses—might attract blockchain startups, investors, and tech companies.

The crypto world is watching. Some believe this could inspire other states to do the same. Could Bitcoin paychecks become the norm nationwide? Too early to tell.

When Would This Happen?

If passed, the Bitcoin Freedom Act would take effect November 1, 2025. That means Oklahoma employees could start getting paid in Bitcoin just over a year from now.

Final Thoughts: A Crypto Future for Paychecks?

Love it or hate it, Bitcoin is slowly making its way into mainstream finance. Whether or not this bill passes, the conversation is shifting. Would you take your paycheck in Bitcoin? Or is crypto still too risky for you?

Stay tuned—Oklahoma’s just getting started.
