On CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, former communications director for Vice President Kamala Harris, Jamal Simmons, made waves by proposing that President Joe Biden resign to allow Harris to step in as the first female president. Simmons’ surprising suggestion quickly drew reactions from the panel, including host Dana Bash.

“Joe Biden’s been a phenomenal president,” Simmons said, acknowledging Biden’s achievements. “There’s one promise left that he could fulfill—being a transitional figure. He could resign the presidency in the next 30 days, make Kamala Harris President of the United States.” The comment, which prompted audible reactions, underscored Simmons’ belief that a bold gesture would capture public attention and shift the political narrative.

Simmons elaborated on his reasoning, noting that Biden stepping down would “absolve [Harris] from having to oversee the January 6th transition of her own defeat” and “dominate the news” at a critical time for Democrats. “This is the moment for us to change the entire perspective of how Democrats operate,” he added, calling for transparency and bold moves from the party.

Fellow panelist and CNN commentator Scott Jennings responded with humor, quipping, “Jamal’s out here writing a season of House of Cards,” while Bash remarked, “This has now jumped from an internet meme to a Sunday morning show.”

When Bash asked about the possibility of Harris being nominated to the Supreme Court, Simmons remained firm in his call for Harris to assume the presidency, saying, “This is something within Joe Biden’s control… It would fulfill his last promise and give Kamala Harris a chance to be the 47th President of the United States.” Simmons suggested this move could disrupt President-elect Donald Trump’s momentum and rebrand Harris’ role, making it easier for future women to run for the highest office without bearing the weight of being the “first.”

Simmons reiterated his perspective on social media, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “Joe Biden has been amazing but he should fulfill one last promise – to be transitional… Biden should resign and make Kamala Harris the first woman president.” Simmons called for a more dramatic approach to politics, suggesting that Democrats embrace “drama and excitement” to advance their policies.

Simmons’ remarks follow recent discussions within the Democratic Party about potential resignations and appointments. A CNN commentator had recently floated the idea of Justice Sonia Sotomayor stepping down so Biden could replace her with Harris before Trump’s inauguration.
