Stephen A Smith, host of the ESPN show “First Take”, attacked Former President Barack Obama’s remarks about Black men and their unwillingness to support Kamala Harris on his podcast. Obama once suggested on the campaign trail that Black men are misogynists — who ‘disable women’ by not voting for Harris.
Smith (not a tad shy) responded with a response to Obama’s allegations as ‘unacceptable.’ Smith noted that Black voters have good reasons not to vote for Harris, due to economic and policy reasons rather than the sexist ones Obama implied.
“Inflation, the cost of living, gas, and groceries—do those things not matter?” Smith asked, highlighting the struggles many Americans are facing. He went on to criticize Harris and the Democratic Party’s policies, which he claims prioritize illegal immigrants over U.S. citizens, specifically Black Americans. Smith pointed out recent moves by Democrats, such as offering prepaid credit cards to undocumented immigrants in New York City, while longtime residents continue to struggle with basic needs.
While Smith confirmed that he will vote for Harris, he also noted that there are many Black voters who are unsatisfied with the direction of the Biden-Harris administration, saying they should have no right to doubt its policies. “Just because someone disagrees with Kamala doesn’t mean they’re misogynistic,” Smith added. “It’s about policies, not gender.”
Smith’s remarks came as voters became increasingly disillusioned with how the current administration was handling many important issues. His criticisms share sentiments by many who believe mainstream Democrats haven’t been taking serious measures to satisfy the urgent needs of ordinary Americans, especially minorities.
It’s not the first time Smith has taken aim at the Biden government. Smith, in turn, had made it public earlier this year criticizing Biden and the Democrats on immigration, accusing them of being more supportive of undocumented immigrants than hard-hit U.S. citizens. Smith is known to speak out on topics other than sport, and this new critique shows he’s willing to attack even Obama if he thinks he is wrong.
Obama’s remark, made in hopes of rallying Black voters to support Kamala Harris, could have had the opposite effect, as Smith and other leading Black voices continue to push back against the administration on real policy, not identity politics.
